Object Description

Circa 1890. A late Victorian mahogany and inlaid drum table stamped ‘James Schoolbred & Co,’ the circular top inlaid with the signs of the zodiac entwined by a weave of harebells and leaves. The deep inlaid frieze with four drawers with classic Sheraton inlay of swags, tails and shell inlay, the top rests on mahogany inlaid faceted stem, with four hipped saber legs inlaid with large bell drops inlaid on the facing, with inlaid urns on the block, finishing on a brass toe with original brass castors beneath.

Shoolbred, James & Co. Tottenham Court Road, London; furniture makers, upholsterers and retailers (fl.1814-c.1934) James Shoolbred was a linen draper of Scottish descent. In 1814 he formed the partnership, Shoolbred & Co., which moved to 153 Tottenham Court Road in 1817. The firm gradually expanded to include woollen drapery, silk mercery, haberdashery and carpet supplies. By 1840 Shoolbred was in partnership with Cooke and were listed in the 1845 London Directory at 145-156 Tottenham Court Road and 43 & 44 Grafton Street as Shoolbred, Cooke & Co.
