Object Description

Victorian Mahogany Drop Dial Clock.

Well figured octagonal case with brass inlay surround. Eight day Fusee movement with engraved pendulum bob depicting a duck and rural scene showing through the aperture. The painted dial inscribed ‘Carter’, Bridge Street, Warrington.

An interesting feature of this clock is that the back plate of the movement bears several crudely engraved repairers marks, those that are clear enough to be read are: Nov.1868,1871,1885, January 6th 1916 and also may 1887 a fascinating record of the clocks history. C.1850.

Six different men from the Carter family are listed in Keith Appelby’s informative book ‘The clockmakers of Cheshire’ working in Warrington from 1780 up until 1855. This clock would most probably have been made by Joseph Carter who worked at 19, Bridge Street from 1846 to 1855.
