Object Description

A fine quality early 19th Century mahogany stick barometer, the case with a break-arch pediment with a brass urn finial over the plates which are protected by a glazed door. The tube is exposed on the trunk, which is edge moulded with herringbone mahogany veneers. The tube cistern terminates within a hemispherical cistern cover.

The silvered brass register plates are signed by the maker, WATKINS, BRISTOL. It is mounted with a mercury Fahrenheit thermometer and a manually operated Vernier slide.

Dated c.1825.

Object History

William Watkins of Bristol is recorded in Banfield’s ‘Barometer Makers and Retailers’ as working at 16, St Augustines Parade from 1825-1830.
