Malachite inlaid black marble plinth-form mantel clock
French, c. 1876
Height 24cm, width 39cm, depth 16cm
This rather unusual but nonetheless beautiful mantel clock is formed from deep black marble and green malachite, both of which accented with gilt engraving. The clock case is plinth-form in shape, featuring a flat top, a wider base, and concave sides. The black marble body is inset with malachite panels and is adorned with scrolled gilt engraving. The front of the case is inset with the circular dial, which is signed “DENT, 61 Strand, London.” The front of the block, below the dial, is mounted with a silver plaque that reads “’Presented to the Rev C W Penny by The New Dormitories, March 1876”.
