Object Description

An elegant marble statue of the pacing stallion after the antique by Alceo Doessena. Inspired by the Horses of San Marco in Venice, this beautifully carved stallion is a testament to Dossena’s artistry. In all’antica style, he included a strut and palm tree as supports for the fragile composition of the horse.

This piece evokes a sense of life and movement, with its flowing mane and expertly carved features. A stunning decorative piece for a period property looking to evoke charm, elegance, and allure.

Alceo Dossena (1878-1937)

A historical and curious figure in the art world, Aleco Dossena enjoyed a successful career as a restorer of sculpture, but found himself unemployed after the war and turned to the conception of original works in the style of the past.

Although, Dossena was known for wanting to sell his works honestly, many of his works circulated on the art market as period sculptures, fooling connoisseurs and collectors. In 1928 Dossena discovered the deception surrounding his works and sued his dealers. As a consequence a number of his works were exhibited and sold in New York in 1933.

This Pacing Stallion is representative of these many works that were once handcrafted by this talented yet controversial sculptor. It is a piece of history that is now looking for a new honest home.
