Object Description
A very stylish and unusual Doulton Lambeth Art Pottery jug with mask handle and scrolling leaf designs by renowned modeler, designer and decorator Mark V Marshall and dating from around 1890. The stoneware jug is of rounded bulbous shape standing on a narrow round slightly skirted foot and with a tall funnel shaped neck with a pinched pouring spout to the top rim. A looped and ribbed handle is applied to one side with a grotesque mask terminal and with the upper element ofg the handle splitting where it joins the body and forming scroll like wind or leaf designs. The style of the jug is unusual and crosses over from the Aesthetic Movement influeneces to the those of the Art Nouveau period combining the thickly wave shaped patterning over a series of small circular designs set between small white applied dots. The designs are hand painted in tones of brown, white, blue and lilac and set against a mottled light green ground with darker green glazes applied to the handle. The jug has an impressed makers mark to the base and is numbered 867. The base also has incised artist marks for Mark V Marshall along with assistant marks for Jane Rumbol and Rosina Harris. There is also a written script museum style reference number along with a collection paper label.
