Object Description

Massive Indo-Persian gold-damascened steel bull sculpture
Indo-Persian, 20th Century
Height 115cm, width 180cm, depth 52cm

This remarkable bull sculpture stands as a bold and decorative example of Indo-Persian gold-damascened steel artistry, crafted in the Qajar revival style during the 20th century. The ancient technique of gold damascening—known as koftgari in both Persian and Indian traditions—has a storied heritage, tracing back to the early Islamic world and drawing on earlier Near Eastern metalworking practices. Artisans in Iran and northern India refined the method, embedding delicate gold wire into carefully prepared steel surfaces to achieve richly detailed, lustrous designs. The Qajar era (1789–1925) and its aftermath saw a revival of this craft, with workshops producing elaborate decorative objects that referenced historical motifs while appealing to discerning patrons and collectors.

The sculpture depicts a robust standing bull, its powerful form completely enveloped in intricate gold damascened patterns. Swirling arabesques, scrolling foliage, and prominent circular medallions adorn the flanks, legs, and neck, harmoniously tailored to the contours of the animal’s anatomy. The head is finely modelled, featuring expressive eyes and elegantly stylized horns, while a collar adorned with small bells encircles the neck, lending a ceremonial and almost talismanic presence.

A particularly striking feature of this piece is its functional interior: the bull’s belly opens via a discreet drop-down panel, revealing a hidden compartment lined with patterned textiles. The interior fabric showcases repeating floral and paisley motifs, emphasizing the luxurious and possibly ceremonial purpose of the object, suggesting it may have been used for storage or as a display piece.

Along the upper body, a gold-damascened Arabic inscription conveys a benedictory message, invoking divine protection and blessing. Such inscriptions are a hallmark of Islamic decorative arts, enhancing both the visual richness and the auspicious significance of the sculpture.

This work is exceptional not only for its impressive scale and intricate craftsmanship but also for its rare combination of figural sculpture with a concealed, textile-lined interior, making it a standout example of 20th-century Indo-Persian decorative art.
