A beautiful bronze torc comprised of a round section shank with an incised ribbed design. Torcs are common items of adornment in many European cultures from the 8th century BC to the 3rd century AD. These elaborate items of jewellery made a reappearance during the Viking period between the 9th and 11th centuries AD. This may be because the twisting nature of the torc was thought to recall Loki’s son Jormungand, a giant serpent who lived in the ocean that surrounded Midgard. Torcs such as this one would also have served as important symbols of rank and wealth.
