Object Description

A mid 19th century (circa 1860) Anglo Indian padouk carved circular tilt top occasional table, probably from the Bombay region.

This table consists of a solid circular padouk top of fine, faded patina with carved foliate edge leading down to a carved frieze with circular roundels with flower design and scrolling foliage with a carved gadroon design below, the top can either be secured down or tilted up.

This leads down to the turned and carved central baluster column with scrolling acanthus and foliate carved decoration.

The table is supported on a tri-form base with carved foliate decoration with carved foliate apron below terminating on turned and carved bun feet.

This style of table and foliate leaf carving is typically found on pieces of furniture from the Bombay region of India dating to around 1850-1860.

A very similar larger example of this design of table can be seen in the book ‘Furniture From British India & Ceylon’ by Amin Jaffer on page 342, Fig. 137 which shows a table from an original photograph taken in the Reception Room in the Zanzibar Agency 1865-1869 – this was probably the American Consul’s residence in Zanzibar, it appears that Anglo Indian furniture was readily available in Zanzibar and Kenya at this time as Indian carvers were working on the East coast of Africa as well as in their homeland.

This table is in very good condition for age, is of stable construction and can go straight into a home and would make a very versatile addition to any interior!
