‘In encampments persons of the highest distinction are obliged to accommodate themselves to such temporary circumstances, which encampments are ever subject to. Hence every article of an absolutely necessary kind must be made very portable, both for package and that such utensils may not retard a rapid movement… And it will be noted that most of the things of this nature will suit a long sea voyage’. So wrote Thomas Sheraton in his ‘design book’ of 1803 before going on to describe a ‘field officer’s tent and marquee’ with its furnishings of ‘camp or field bedsteads, camp chairs, desk, stools and tables’.
