Object Description

A mid 19th century (circa 1870) walnut and leather office armchair of fine patina.

This unusual armchair consists of a deep, shaped back support with shaped broad arms and a carved, shaped and pierced central back splat with carved and pierced decoration with turned finials to either side.

The arms are supported by shaped and pierced arm supports leading down to a shaped seat with leather and stud detail.

The armchair is supported by four turned legs with vase shaped feet, all joined by turned double H-form stretchers.

This armchair design is based on a style of chair known as a smokers chairs, office chair or Captains chair which are possibly one of the most comfortable wooden seated chairs due to their design. They were often found in offices, men’s clubs and pubs due to their robust structure and were produced in many areas in England.

This armchair is extremely comfortable, is in very good condition for age, is of stable construction and can go straight into a home or office.
