Object Description

A late 18th or early 19th-century Edo period hasamibako [travelling chest] of diminutive small proportions.

The rectangular box and flush fitting cover, decorated in gold hiramaki-e on a black ground, the sides with hanabishi, cherry blossom and willow, the cover with further sprays of willow and blossoms, the interior opening to reveal a rectangular inner tray in black lacquer with fundame rim, the interior of the box lined with paper decorated with sparse gold foil. engraved silver fittings with scrollwork.
