Object Description

Minimalist 1940s Mongolian Carpet

3.80 x 2.94 metres

Although few antique examples have survived, the tradition of Mongolian carpet weaving stretches back centuries, drawing inspiration from Chinese textile designs. It incorporates characteristic elements such as tigers, Buddhist motifs, and infinite knots but distinguishes itself through a more dynamic and creative use of color, as well as the exceptional quality of its wool.

This particular carpet, dating to the 1940s, features a repeated dragon pattern in muted bronze and lavender tones—symbolic of water, thunder, and the forces of nature—set against a light champagne background and framed by a delicate geometric b0rder. While it incorporates traditional motifs, its restrained palette and open composition give it a distinctly mid-century modern aesthetic, making it a perfect fit for contemporary interiors.

The wool is soft and lustrous, and the carpet is in very good to excellent practical condition for everyday use.

A rare and unique piece that would enhance a sophisticated space.
