Object Description

Minimalist Kashan Carpet, c. 1930s
2.95 x 2.13 m

Masterfully worked on a light grey colour ground and woven in lustrous high-quality wool, this 1940s Kashan rug features a series of floral and vegetal motifs, in vegetable dyed colours. While sharing many of the characteristic drawings of earlier Kashan works, this piece departs from the traditional layout, opting instead for an open, free field design, the border blending with the central field, taking influence from mid-century modern design, and lending the work a distinct feeling of relaxed elegance.

The city of Kashan, among the best-known and highly ranked Persian rug-weaving centers, first rose to prominence in the 16th Century, under the Safavid Dynasty. These workshops earned a reputation for producing many of the most highly sought-after rugs of the Classical period and continued their work into the early 20th Century.

Preserved in very good to excellent condition, the fringes and borders all fully retained, this carpet represents a stunning example of its type, with a surprisingly modern feel, and would make a fine addition to any setting.
