Object Description
Neoclassical style porcelain and gilt bronze mounted circular table by Fournier
French, late 19th Century
Height 75.5cm, diameter 76cm
This beautiful circular table is a wonderful piece of Louis XVI memorabilia, and a superb piece of nineteenth-century French furniture. The table features a circular mahogany top above a baluster-shaped pedestal, which is supported by three scrolling brackets above a triangular base. The edge of the table is mounted with a gilt bronze running dog frieze and an egg-and-dart border, and gilt bronze mounts accent other elements of the table, such as the intricately cast swags that adorn the buttresses. The tabletop is mounted centrally with a large circular porcelain plaque depicting Louis XVI. This plaque, painted in a courtly style and set within a gilt bronze frame, is surrounded by twelve smaller oval plaques, each depicting either a floral bouquet or an associate of the King.
The porcelain portraits are signed ‘Polyet’ and are marked to the reverse with interlaced ‘L’s. A gilt bronze mount is marked for A. M. E. Fournier.
