Object Description
Oil on board painting by Peter Cumming RBA (1916-1993)
Although very much a painting of its own time –the 1950s– at a glance, this could pass for a regency street scene amidst the elegance of the Brighton stucco. Peter Cumming was working as an illustrator at the time this was painted, and this period saw his finest work. It depicts the day-to-day interactions in a street in the Kemp Town area of Brighton. A classic British painting of what was then thought of as the ‘New Elizabethan Age’, with all the outward looking optimism that entailed.
