Object Description
An Extremely Good Quality Late 19th Century Oriental Hardwood Opium Table, Or Coffee Table, Having Stunningly Figured Panelled Top, Over Elegantly Carved And Pierced Frieze, Flanked By Pierced And Carved Curved Ends And Further Carved Scrolling Supports.
A very attractive 19th Century Coffee Table which is fairly typical of the items which were being produced in China specifically for the western market from early in the 19th century and beyond. These items are commonly referred to as having been made for the Chinese Export market.
Normally referred to as opium tables due to their similarity in design to other tables used in China during the 18th and 19th centuries for people to sit on the floor and smoke opium at these hardwood coffee tables are always very popular indeed. That is mainly because they serve a purpose which very few other genuine antiques can, which is be used as a coffee table in modern interiors.
The oriental hardwood which it is constructed from is a particularly hard wearing wood making it perfect for use as a coffee table and requiring very little ongoing care, polishing and attention
It is also worth mentioning how wonderfully figured the top is, really quite a rare feature indeed.
This item is ready to placed straight into the home having had a clean, polish and wax in the traditional manner at our workshops.
