This striking Orientalist oil on canvas portrays the Patio de las Doncellas at the Alcázar of Seville, framed by slender marble columns and an intricately carved, deeply scalloped arch adorned with exquisite Mudéjar ornament. The surrounding walls are richly worked with densely interlaced stucco reliefs in warm cream and ochre, enlivened by traces of blue and terracotta, reflecting the remarkable craftsmanship of medieval Andalusia.
Beyond the principal arch, the palette deepens as a sequence of elegant horseshoe arches recedes into the shadowed interior. The chamber beyond glows with warm oxblood-red walls, gilded decoration and brilliant bands of polychrome azulejo tilework in shades of blue, green and ochre, while stained glass and glimpses of the gardens introduce cooler notes of light, set in compelling contrast to the warmth within. The carefully constructed composition captures the layered architectural complexity and atmospheric beauty for which the Alcázar is celebrated.
Now protected as part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Seville, the Alcázar was extensively rebuilt during the reign of King Peter I of Castile between 1364 and 1366, when Muslim craftsmen from Granada and elsewhere in al-Andalus created one of the finest surviving examples of Mudéjar architecture, blending Islamic artistic traditions with Christian patronage. The Patio de las Doncellas, or Courtyard of the Maidens, forms the ceremonial heart of the palace and has long been among its most admired and frequently depicted spaces. Paintings of Andalusian interiors such as this enjoyed considerable popularity in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, appealing to Grand Tour travellers and collectors drawn to the romance of Spain’s Moorish heritage.
Fernando Liger Hidalgo (Spanish, 1880–1945), a native of Seville, specialised in views of the city’s celebrated monuments, and above all the Royal Alcázar. Working during the first half of the 20th century, he returned repeatedly to its courtyards, horseshoe arches, carved stucco and vibrant azulejo decoration, and especially to the Patio de las Doncellas. His finely executed architectural interiors became sought-after souvenirs for visitors to Andalusia and continue to appear regularly on the international art market today. The painting is signed and inscribed lower right, F. Liger Hidalgo / Sevilla, and is presented in a handsome parcel-gilt ebonised wood frame.
