Signed ‘R. Wagner’.
Impressed mark to the reverse ‘KPM’ (Konigliche Porzellan-Manufaktur).
This finely painted porcelain plaque depicts Othello, the Moor of Venice, relating his adventures as captain of the Venetian fleet before Senator Brabantio and his daughter Desdamona from Act 1, Scene 3 of Shakespeare’s tragedy. The figures set within a richly envisaged Renaissance loggia. The original painting by Carl Ludwig Friedrich Becker (1820 -1900) is in the National Museum in Wrocław, Poland.
The Wagner family were celebrated porcelain painters working from Graf-Starhemberg-Gasse in Vienna, who were particularly noted for their fine detail and historicist subjects.
