This charming painting is by John Frederick Herring the Younger, son of John Frederick Herring the Older—both being prolific painters of farmyard and countryside scenes. The present painting depicts horses, pigs, cattle, and various other animals in a farmyard, with a hunt in the distance.
The oil on canvas painting is held within a fine carved giltwood frame affixed with a name plate to the lower centre reading ‘John Frederick Herring’. The painting is signed lower left ‘J. F. Herring’.
