This fine oil on panel painting is attributed to the English artist John Calcott Horsley. The painting depicts Anne Page and Master Slender, two characters in Shakespeare’s play The Merry Wives of Windsor. The figures are executed in a fluid and precise manner, the style of which is typical of Victorian art. Their costume is historicising, as is their architectural setting.
