Object Description

A fine quality pair of 19th Century Satinwood parquetry inlaid, marble topped side / console tables, with mirror backs, three quarter pierced brass gallery. wonderful parquetry inlay to the tops and frieze drawers. Supported on four ormolu mounted fluted legs, united by marble topped stretchers and turned tapering feet.
In the manner of Donald Ross.
Donald Ross was a celebrated furniture maker of the late 19th Century. His firm had premises at 13 Denmark Square, Soho during the third quarter of the nineteenth century. Distinctive of their work was the use of dotted marquetry trellis inlay in the 18th Century manner of the renowned Parisian makers. Ross exhibited at the Great Exhibition of 1851 in London and his work was retailed by top Victorian furniture stores such as Edwards and Roberts, James Winter & Sons and John Watson of Oxford Street. Today, Donald Ross’ work is held in museums across the world. In London, for example, a pair of Donald Ross side tables decorated with his distinctive ‘dot & trellis’ marquetry inlay, is held in the Victoria and Albert Museum.
