Object Description

A Good Quality Late 18th Century George III Period Matched Pair Of Mahogany Bedside Night Tables, Or Tray Top Commodes, Having Very Attractive Shaped Gallery Tops, With Integrated Pierced Carrying Handles, Over Sliding Tambour Cupboard Doors Enclosing Storage Cavity, And Converted Pull Out Drawers With Inlaid Strung Decoration And Replacement Old Brass Handles, Raised On Typical Square Chamfered Legs.

These are a good example of the stereotypical Georgian bedside night table. At some point in their history they have been matched together into a pair, which is extremely common due to a relentless demand over many years for matching tables either side of a bed, in combination to the relative scarcity and therefore extremely high price of any true pairs which can occasionally be found on the market.

The differences are relatively minor, with just some ever so slightly different mouldings in places, plus one being quarter of an inch deeper than the other the only real differences to speak of, alongside the handles in the galleries being slightly different shapes. Frankly, it takes extremely close inspection, with them side by side and back to back to notice any differences at all, so either side of a bed or similar there is absolutely no way one would be able to see any differences.

It is indeed quite likely that they were made in the same workshop originally. The tambour door is a very functional feature, meaning less space is required than those which have cupboard doors that open out. They retain a nice rich colour and patina.

The design continues to prove an extremely popular option for bedside tables due to its relative sturdiness, especially when compared to various other bedside options, the storage its able to offer and the tray type tops which make it much less likely items perched on the top will get knocked over.

As with all items we offer for sale this Pair Of Bedside Tables have been inspected and attended to in our workshops by our highly skilled, specialist trained, antique furniture restorers and received a natural wax polish before being offered for sale to ensure that they are in excellent condition and ready for immediate placement within the home.
