Object Description
Pair of 19th century Italian upholstered X-frame stools
Italian, c. 1840
Height 53cm, width 49cm, depth 40cm
This pair of refined stools features a plush, upholstered seat and an elegant walnut frame. Crafted in Italy in around 1840, the stools’ design is an example of high quality, Italian craftsmanship.
The seat on both stools is upholstered with a vibrant yellow fabric, a wonderful choice of colour to ensure the furniture pieces are eye-catching and attention-grabbing. The upholstered seat is topped by a very plush cushion, upholstered in the same vivid textile. The edges are adorned with a subtle green and cream trim. The same-coloured trim is used for the two large tassels hanging from the four corners of each cushion.
The stools are supported on a beautifully handmade walnut frame. Below the upholstered seat is a wide, plain frieze from which two shaped and scrolled opposing X-frame supports extend. Both are centred by a delicate roundel detailing. A ring-turned baluster stretcher joins the two shaped pieces and ensures the stools are durable and comfortable.
The bright colouring of the upholstery paired with the dark brown wood creates a magnificent play of contrasts and ensures these stools would fit in superbly in the appropriate interior space.
