Object Description

Pair of antique Bohemian ruby glass and parcel gilt vases
Bohemian, Late 19th Century
Height 38cm, diameter 14.5cm

Manufactured in Bohemia (modern-day Czech Republic), the renowned centre of glass production, this pair of vases is of baluster form and decorated in numerous ways.

Each vase is made from ruby red glass overlaid with white glass and parcel gilding. The white glass is used to adorn several parts of the vases such as the neck and body and is formed in a shape reminiscent of a leaf. The gradual shading of the overlaid glass to the ruby red body is expertly made and further accentuated with the use of gilding.

A large portion of the vases is skilfully gilded with foliage motifs adding to the naturalistic theme running throughout the design.

Since the 16th century, workshops in Bohemia specialised in the production of high-quality glassware. Various techniques have been used and developed such as that of colouring glass or glass enamelling. The modern-day Czech Republic is still renowned for its high quality glass pieces usually made for an international clientele.

This magnificent pair of vibrant vases would make a stunning and eye-catching addition to one’s interior space and are superb for the display of rich floral compositions.
