Object Description

A pair of antique English encaustic medieval style tiles perfect for display in a period cottage or townhouse.

The set comprises of two 12cm tiles displaying a pomegranate and Tudor rose in a vivid mustard yellow on a rich terracotta background.

Both of the Tudor rose and pomegranate were strong symbols from the Tudor era.

The Tudor rose was known for being England’s emblem of peace after it was adopted by Henry VII at the end of the War of the Roses between the royal house of Lancashire and the royal house of York.

While the pomegranate had a similar meaning; that of fertility, regeneration and the union of England and Spain. It was and still is a significant symbol in Tudor art – largely known for being featured in the British Medical Association, the Royal College of Physicians of London, and various other organisations.

Dating from the mid 19th century, these reclaimed floor tiles have been in use for over 170 years and as such have a characterful, timeworn look with scuffs and crazing to the glaze that only enhances the beauty of these striking tiles.

The perfect decorative pair for a period property looking to add style and charm.
