Largest: Height 24cm, width 27cm, depth 12cm
Smallest: Height 21cm, width 28cm, depth 13cm

This remarkable pair of bronze bird sculptures, crafted in late 19th century France, is the work of esteemed sculptor Jules Moigniez (1835–1894). Recognized for his mastery in animal sculpture, Moigniez first exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1855 and continued to showcase his work there on numerous occasions.

These elegant sculptures depict two birds, likely a ruff and a curlew, positioned on intricately designed naturalistic bases. The ruff, captured mid-motion with its feathers fluffed, appears ready to take flight. Meanwhile, the curlew clutches a small fish in its slender beak, embodying a moment of triumph.

The textured bases, adorned with foliage and rocky elements, provide a realistic setting for these figures. A fence incorporated into the curlew’s scene reinforces the impression of a riverside or lakeside habitat, enhancing the sculpture’s storytelling quality. Cast in superbly patinated bronze, these works showcase Moigniez’s exceptional attention to detail, from the fine feather patterns to the rugged terrain beneath them.

Each piece is signed ‘J. Moigniez’ on the base.

Superb for collectors of 19th century bronzes or enthusiasts of animalier sculpture, this distinguished pair would make a captivating addition to any collection.
