French, Late 19th Century
Fireplaces: Height 112cm, width 152cm, depth 33cm
Iron inserts: Height 89cm, width 115cm, depth 46cm
Made in late 19th century France from statuary marble, ormolu and cast iron, this identical pair of fireplaces is a very desirable addition to the appropriate interior space.
The marble body is expertly adorned with high quality ormolu mounts. These are cast in various shapes depicting acanthus leaves, rosettes, and Empire-style mythical beasts. The white colouration of the marble is a stunning base for the shining gold of the ormolu detailing.
The cast iron insets depict a central scene of a courting couple. The male is playing for the lady, and the scene is set in a woodland. Framing it are numerous laurel leaf garlands, some ribbon tied. Below the scene is further foliage adding to the woodland scenery.
