Object Description

Pair of antique Persian woolen carpets from Kashan
Persian, c. 1930
Height 214cm, width 129cm

This pair of Kashan handwoven wool rugs illustrates age-old luxury and quality craftsmanship.

The rugs showcase the iconic tear-drop medallion central to Kashan patterns. This design—a tribute to classical artistry—is graced with a festoon of flowers around it featuring the floral pomegranate motif.

Surrounding the central medallion the observer finds a composition of various other flower motifs, some of them fashioned around vases. There are also leaf patterns in the corners providing a gentle contrast to the richly detailed center. Unlike most other Kashan carpets, these pieces possess a unique blend of geometric and more organic floral elements. These later ones provide nuanced realism and gentle curves lending a serene, harmonious touch to the carpet.

Interwoven hues of rose, ivory, azure, and coral create a striking color palette. This scheme, against a backdrop of deep-crimson, whispers tales of ancient eras.

Surrounding the visual narrative of the central panel, five borders unfurl, each echoing the centrepiece’s colors. The widest among them highlights the captivating pomegranate design, nestled amidst elegant acanthus leaves.

These rugs symbolize enduring value and design tradition. Their combined worth as a pair sets them apart for discerning collectors. With their adherence to traditional Kashan composition but unique incorporation of figurative flowers, they seamlessly bridge the gap between timeless grace and contemporary elegance.
