Object Description
Pair of antique porcelain sconces by Meissen
German, late 19th Century
Height 57cm, width 38cm, depth 10cm
This fine pair of German Rococo style Meissen sconces features beautifully encrusted porcelain flowers and petals and delicately hand-painted passages. In their unmatched quality, the pair epitomises the very best of the Meissen porcelain factory.
Each of the sconces features a diamond form back plate, the edges beautifully shaped with expansive foliage. The central panel of the back plate is defined by a rich red drape, in front of which, in each light, sits a nude figure—one male, the other female—accompanied by a cherub. Each sconce supports two branches, each terminating in a single candle holder.
The back plate of one sconce is signed, underglaze, with blue crossed swords—the signature of Meissen.
