Object Description

Pair of antique Samson porcelain models of Bolognese Hounds
French, Late 19th Century
Larger model: Height 22cm, width 30cm, depth 12cm
Smaller model: Height 19cm, width 30cm, depth 12cm

This charming pair of porcelain dog figures was crafted by Samson et Cie (French, 1845-1969). The manufactory specialised in the creation of high quality reproductions of pieces by other renowned manufactories such as, in this case, Meissen. The design of these models is inspired by one created for Meissen in 1769 by Johann Joachim Kändler (German, 1706-1775).

The models showcase seated Bolognese Hounds, which were a very popular breed of lapdogs in 18th century Germany. Each one is skilfully crafted, its form showcasing the elaborate coat one would see on dogs of this breed. Brown markings cover parts of the models, and their facial features are very well painted. The two designs beautifully complement each other and can be displayed together or separately.

Each model bears the Samson mark used on pieces inspired by those crafted by Meissen.

This pair of adorable dog models would be a superb gift for anyone who admires dogs.
