Object Description
Pair of Chinese hardstone and jade flower models
Chinese, 20th Century
Height 33cm, width 25cm, depth 17cm
This superb pair of hardstone flower models are almost identical in design, comprising hardstone trees set within rectangular jade planters. With the long and symbolic history of Chinese jade carving, the inclusion of this material, which is associated with both strength and purity, adds a spiritual significance to this object.
The central trunk, as well as the stems of each tree, are metal, wrapped with dark thread to evoke the natural colour and textures of the plant. Surmounting the stems are pale brown hardstone leaves, which effectively replicate the variegation and veining of their real-life counterparts, as well as stunning hardstone blossoms, in shades of lilac, red, green, and orange. The blossoms are centred by beaded stigmas, in contrasting shades of bright yellows and reds.
The compositions stand upon four-footed ebonised wood plinths, which are carved with openwork designs of a foliate manner.
Showcasing the skill of Chinese makers in the 20th century, this exquisite pair are true objets d’art.
