Object Description
A pair of superbly decorative Chinoiserie pictures, in black and blue lacquer, exquisitely polychrome and gilt-decorated in relief throughout, with birds amidst sakura blossom.
Japan, circa 1920.
Why we like them
The quality of decoration on these panels is unbelievably exquisite. The minutest detail of the tree bark and flowers in shades of gold is simply astonishing. We love the drama of colours and composition, too.
Such luxurious items were popular in England during the height of fashion for oriental exoticism, called chinoiserie and japonisme in Europe.
