Object Description
Pair of classical Italian grey marble vases after the famous Medici vase
Italian, 19th Century
Height 51cm, width 26cm, depth 25cm
These exceptional vases are carved from dark greenish marble in a classical style. Each vase is modelled as an ancient Greek bell krater, with a cylindrical body, flared rim, twin handles, and a narrow socle. The particular model for the present vases is the celebrated Medici Vase, now in Florence, which was produced in Greece some two thousand years ago. Like the original, the present vases depict in relief a frieze of figures. The vases are raised on marble plinths, each with a classical mask carved in relief to the front face.
