Object Description

A PAIR OF EARLY 19TH CENTURY PATINATED BRONZE TWIN ARM COLZA OIL LAMPS, CONVERTED TO ELECTRICITY
The central column with cast foliate decoration, surmounted by an urn with a pointed finial on top. Each with two straight arms and single burners, now fitted with E14 bulb holders.
With later replacement glass shades. England c. 1835

Object History

Colza oil was used extensively in European domestic lighting before the advent of coal gas or paraffin. The central urn would have contained the tick colza oil (rapeseed).

Object Condition

Good, they have been recently converted for use with electricity, the clear and etched glass shades are new.
