Object Description

Pair of English Victorian Louis XV-Style Giltwood Armchairs
English, c. 1840
Height: 96cm, width 55cm, depth 46cm

This distinguished pair of carved giltwood armchairs is an excellent example of Louis XV-style seat furniture, dating to the early Victorian period. Elegantly proportioned and finely carved, the chairs reflect the refined craftsmanship and decorative sophistication that characterised the best cabinet-making workshops of the period.
Each chair features a shaped back beneath a carved crest rail centred by a rocaille cartouche, framed by scrolling acanthus foliage and floral ornament. The gracefully scrolled arms terminate in carved volutes above serpentine seat rails centred by boldly carved shells, while the elegant cabriole legs are headed by acanthus carving and terminate in scrolling feet. The crisp, hand-carved ornament extends throughout each giltwood frame, demonstrating the quality and confidence of its execution.
Inspired by the furniture of Louis XV France, the Rococo Revival became one of the defining decorative styles of the Victorian period, with cabinet makers reinterpreting the fluid curves and naturalistic ornament of 18th-century French design for the grand reception rooms of Britain’s country houses and fashionable town residences.
The seats, backs, and arm pads are upholstered in a rich red damask with a repeating foliate pattern and brass nailhead trim, complementing the warm tones of the giltwood frames. Graceful in proportion and richly carved, this pair is equally suited to a distinguished period interior or a carefully curated contemporary setting.
