Object Description
Pair of framed Chinese watercolour pith paper paintings of dignitaries
Chinese, 20th Century
Height 24cm, width 36cm, depth 1.5cm
This exceptional duo of Chinese watercolours is created on delicate pith paper, also referred to as rice paper. Thanks to its low absorbency, the paint remains on the surface, producing vivid colours with impressive depth and brilliance. During the 19th century, artworks like these were highly prized by European travellers who collected them as cultural keepsakes from their journeys to China.
The paintings feature dignitaries seated on grand chairs accompanied by side tables, surrounded by attendants who stand watch, offer gifts, or converse. The indoor settings are enhanced by the artist’s meticulous attention to detail, especially the intricately patterned floors.
Each piece is bordered by an ornate decorative frame and housed within an elegant cream-coloured outer frame.
A superb acquisition, this pair makes a beautiful addition to any collection of Chinese art.
