Object Description

Pair of French antique gilt bronze and porphyry lamps
French, Late 19th Century
Lamps: Height 87 (tallest) / 75cm (shortest), diameter 21cm
Shades: Height 32cm, diameter 50cm

This wonderful pair of vases was made in late 19th century France from deep purple porphyry and ormolu (gilt bronze).

The Neoclassical style lamp bodies are of baluster shape, each one standing on a spreading socle stand. A square stepped plinth supports both pieces. The naturally occurring cream speckling on the surface of porphyry adds a refined design feature. During the times of Ancient Rome, porphyry was a symbol of royalty and wealth, adding another intriguing aspect to this very desirable pair of lamps.

A pair of scroll handles mounted above satyr masks adorn the sides of both lamps. These are joined by a draping garland of flowers and foliage. Several decorative bandings adorn the circumference of the lamps. The lower bodies of the pieces are beautifully mounted with acanthus leaf detailing. All decoration is expertly cast from ormolu.

In the 19th century, the pieces were made as vases but were later converted into lamps. The top of the lid opens to reveal a gold adjustable metal rod extending high above the vases. Two lightbulbs can be attached to the top, creating an ambient surrounding. A pinecone finial, originally mounted on top of the lid, now surmounts the gold rod. Each lamp includes a gold-coloured fabric lampshade.

The superb antique bases are joined with modern technological innovations to create a wonderful piece of lighting, one which would add a touch of sophistication to any space.
