Object Description
Pair of French glass vases painted with portraits
French, late 19th Century
Height 54cm, diameter 15cm
Opaline glass—or opaque glass, often tinted with a hint of colour—has been prized for centuries for its elegant beauty. The present pair of vases is a superb example of the material wrought into a beautiful form. Each vase features a white opaline glass body, delicately parcel gilt on occasion. Each vase is painted with a finely executed portrait of a young maiden with an animal, each portrait set within a tooled gilt cartouche.
