Object Description

Pair of French specimen stone, micromosaic and gilt bronze gueridons
French, 20th Century
Height 68cm, diameter 33cm

A gueridon is a furniture type in the form of an ornate table or stand on which various decorative pieces can be displayed. The pair in Mayfair Gallery’s collection was beautifully designed and made in 20th century France.

Each tabletop is inlaid with a variety of specimen stones, displayed in a circular formation. Stones such as lapis lazuli and serpentine are cut in geometrical shapes and inlaid into black surrounding, making the vibrant colours pop. In the centre of the table is a dainty, round micromosaic. Small pieces of stone have been arranged to create an image of ruins, the two tables showcasing similar pictures. The micromosaic is framed in a wide, deep orange border inlaid with alternating pieces of malachite and lapis lazuli.

The gueridons stand on three gilt bronze legs which are attached to the pared-down ormolu frieze on which the tabletops rest. Each cabriole-shaped leg terminates with paw feet placed on round, stepped plinths. Expertly cast gilt bronze mounts in the form of mythical beasts adorn the knees of each leg. X-formed stretchers, cantered by a gilt bronze grotesque mask join the legs together giving stability to the pieces.

The shining gilt bronze paired with vibrantly coloured stones ensures that this pair of gueridons will make an eye-catching addition to the appropriate space.
