Object Description

Pair of G.E.C. Globe Lamps
British Empire Exhibition, Wembley Park, 1924

Designed and manufactured by the General Electric Co., Ltd., London, as commemorative electric lighting for the British Empire Exhibition held at Wembley Park in 1924. Each lamp comprises a spherical opaline glass globe mounted on a cast and moulded base, closely reflecting the monumental globe lighting installed throughout the Exhibition grounds. These lamps were offered commercially by G.E.C. under catalogue references F.5464 (2 ft) and F.5464A (3 ft), and were widely promoted in contemporary publications, including The Architectural Review, where they were described as “The Talk of Wembley.” Retaining their original proportions and fittings, with attractively patinated metalwork and period elements, their survival as a matched pair is particularly rare.
