A Very Good Quality And Extremely Well Matched Pair Of 18th Century, George II Period, Mahogany Bedside Night Tables, Or Tray Top Commodes, Having Well Figured Tops With Shaped Gallery Sides And Pierced Handles, Above Unusual Open Storage Cavities And Converted Pull Out Drawers, Raised On Square Chamfered Legs.
These are a great example of the often found Georgian tray top commode, or bedside night table. A little earlier in date than the vast majority you will see, hence the relative simplicity of their designs and the wonderful rich timber which has been used to construct them with.
As is nearly always the case they have at some point been matched into a pair, although this has been well carried out, with no major differences of any at first look other than a difference of approx half an inch in their width, plus one and a half inches in their depth. It takes close inspection to discover any other differences and those differences are simply a very slightly slightly different thickness of moulding, or slightly different joint design etc.
This form of bedside table continues to prove extremely popular for a whole host of reasons, including the fact they are so sturdy when compared to more traditional, smaller bedside tables. They also offer a large amount of storage and the tray type tops mean it is much less likely that anything placed on the tops will get accidentally knocked over.
There has been a few historic, sympathetic repairs, as one would expect, in keeping with the age of the piece and these blend in nicely now. As with all the items which we offer for sale this pair of bedside tables have been inspected by our highly skilled, traditional furniture restorers and received a natural wax polish before being offered for sale, meaning they are ready for immediate placement within the home.
