Object Description

A pair of 19th century profusely carved walnut open armchairs of Chinese influence in the 18th century style, possibly French.

This highly decorative pair of chairs consist of a shaped top rail with dragon, Chinese symbol, bat and floral carved decoration, the baluster shaped back splats also with finely carved dragon designs.

The uprights with carved bat and serpent decoration leading down to the arms with carved dragon designs and carved scrolling arm supports with carved and shaped seats.

The shaped seat rails with carved serpent decoration with carved cabriole legs to the front with Chinese symbols to the top and tapered carved legs to the back.

The backs of the chairs also profusely carved with various designs of dragons, serpents, bats and Chinese symbols.

The dragon being a symbol of strength, power and good fortune, the bat being a symbol of great happiness and good fortune, the serpent a symbol of rebirth and fertility.

This pair of chairs are in very good condition for age, are of stable construction and can go straight into a home.
