Object Description
Each Capodimonte porcelain plaque in this pair portrays a famous episode from Roman history: The Rape of the Sabines. The scene on each plaque, realised through painted bas-relief, is heavily populated with highly active figures. Each plaque is held within an exceptionally ornate octagonal frame: the frame is mounted with elaborate gilt bronze elements and inset with a variety of stones, including lapis lazuli and agate. The duo, from the softly painted scenes to the beautiful frames, form a remarkable pair.
