Object Description

A wonderful, fine quality pair of Japanese Meiji period (1868-1912) Miyao tsukuru signed figures of two Sumo wrestlers, each bare chested with kimonos thrown over their shoulders, holding aloft cyclindrical covered censers, one wrestler wearing a ‘kesho masashi’ (ceremonial apron)the other wrestler holding an over sized tobacco pouch, fitted with a pipe and a netsuke.
each signed in a gilt rectangular cartouche ‘Miyao tsukuru’ set on rectangular wood stands decorated with scrolling vines in gold leaf.
