Object Description

Pair of KPM porcelain plaques after Spanish Baroque paintings by Murillo
German, Late 19th Century
Plaques: Height 25cm, width 19cm, depth 0.5cm
Frames: 43cm, width 37cm, depth 4cm

Finely painted, these plaques form a pair of works by Konigliche Porzellan-Manufaktur (K.P.M.) after paintings by Bartolomé Esteban Murillo, a Spanish artist active in the mid 17th century. The first is after Murillo’s ‘Boys eating fruit,’ c.1645, while the second is after ‘Young boy playing dice,’ c.1675. Murillo was the leading 17th century painter from Seville, and exercised a great influence on Spanish Baroque painting, and later artists such as Velazquez. These fine painted porcelain plaques faithfully capture the essence of Murillo’s touch, reproducing these great figurative intimate compositions with great fidelity and vitality.

They are impressed with monogram and sceptre marks, ‘K’, incised in red-velvet and gilt gesso frames, and incised 9 3/4″ 7 3/8″.
