Pair of large French antique overlay glass chandeliers by Baccarat

This outstanding pair of late 19th century chandeliers, attributed to the celebrated French glassmaker Baccarat highlight a masterful blend of clear, coloured, and gilded glass.
Each chandelier is anchored by a central shaft made up of rounded, tiered glass elements. The surface features finely cut white overlay glass, delicately gilded along the floral patterns, revealing bold hues of red and green beneath, a recurring decorative motif that brings continuity and richness to the entire design.
At the top, a decorative finial crafted from white and green overlay glass flowers, enriched with gilded accents, crowns each piece. Below, shimmering glass strands and droplets cascade gracefully, catching the light in motion. From a broad, circular dish, scrolled and spiralled glass arms extend outward to create the upper tier, each arm ending in luminous pendants that reflect the chandelier’s vibrant palette.
The lower level mirrors the splendour of the top. Gently curving arms are topped with bobeches in green and white overlay glass, each adorned with glistening drops. Resting above them are deep crimson candle cups, subtly gilded, designed to house candle-style bulbs.
The composition concludes with a flourish: more intricate overlay detailing, delicate suspended glass drops, and a striking tulip-shaped finial in brilliant red glass complete the design, making the chandeliers equally captivating when viewed from beneath.
In the 19th century, Baccarat astutely responded to the increasing interest in European glass across Asia. Among its distinguished clients was Jayajirao Scindia, the Maharaja of Gwalior (1835–1886), for whom the company crafted several magnificent lighting pieces. The style and colour scheme of this pair strongly suggest that they were created for the Indian market.
