Object Description

A pair of Louis XVI style walnut fauteuils of generous proportions. Each with a medallion back, padded arms and seat, the top rail centred by ribbon tied foliate featuring respectively a flute and arrows, the fluted frame with finely carved winding leaves, with acanthus leaves and conformingly-carved arm supports, on stop-fluted turned tapering legs terminating in toupie feet and headed by a laurel leave surrounded medallion. The carving of highest quality and detail, the imposing size inviting to a generous and comodious interior.
Beautifully upholstered with historical pattern silk brocade.

Object History

After a design by Jean-Rene Nadal (1733-1783, Maîtrise 1756). His work was comissioned by the Crown and the Comte d’Artois with comparative armchairs presently part of the collection ‘Mobilier National / Gobelins Beauvais Savonnerie’. Our pair is closely associated in proportion and specific ornamentic design with that of Jean-Rene Nadal and that of the architect and designer Jacques Gondouin de Foleville (1737-1818) who was appointed ‘achritecte et dessinateur du Garde Meuble de la Couronne’ (Furniture Designer to the Crown) by the king in 1769, a post he held for fifteen years.
