Object Description
Pair of late 19th century French painted porcelain lamps
French, Late 19th Century
Height 94cm, width 51cm, depth 51cm
This elegant pair of hand-painted porcelain lamps captures the romantic allure of 19th-century Orientalism. Each lamp is finely shaped and set on ornate gilt bronze bases, featuring intricately cast scrollwork handles.
The vases are richly decorated with vibrant jewel-toned borders framing detailed scenes. One lamp showcases two women in vivid traditional dress, collecting water with ceramic jugs, while the reverse reveals a serene Turkish landscape with a domed mosque under a pale sky. Its companion features another painting of a group of women in richly coloured garments, paired with a depiction of sunlit path lined with trees and whitewashed buildings on the reverse.
Both lamps are fitted with dual light fixtures and topped with understated cream shades, edged in red and blue to complement the palette of the painted scenes without detracting from their detail.
These lamps combine painterly finesse with decorative sophistication—an evocative example of exotic-inspired design, ideal for refined interiors or collectors of antique lighting and orientalist art.
