Object Description

Pair of Louis XVI style ormolu, malachite and rock crystal girandoles
French, Early 20th Century
Height 92cm, width 43cm, depth 43cm

This exquisite pair of girandoles, dating from the early 1900s, showcases a refined design inspired by the 18th century Louis XVI aesthetic.

Crafted from gilded bronze (ormolu), the girandoles are richly ornamented with fine-quality materials. At the top of each, a delicate floral ornament has been skilfully created using amethyst, smoky quartz, and glass, adding a subtle touch of colour and texture. Just below, a central stem of rock crystal draws attention to the network of branching arms, which radiate outward and are embellished with sparkling faceted beads and suspended crystal drops.

Midway down the structure, a second, smaller set of arms mirrors the upper section, while the highlight of each girandole lies in the four main scrolling branches that support the light fittings. Each arm is adorned with stylised acanthus leaf decoration, terminating in a glass candle holder, and further enhanced by strands of hanging crystals that catch the light beautifully.

The entire composition rests on a stepped square base crafted from vibrant green malachite, a semi-precious stone celebrated for its striking natural patterns. The base is accented with gilded bronze trim and banding, which not only frames the stone elegantly but also ties the design together with a harmonious classical finish.

Timeless in appeal, this pair of girandoles serves as a distinguished statement piece.
